Starting its work in 2008, the Cultural Association of Active Citizens (CAAS) is part of the cultural and environmental action and protection network on Skopelos island, Greece.
The Cultural Association of Active Citizens aims at promoting and protecting the interests of the residents in the community on Skopelos in order to improve their quality of life.
One obvious focus is the support of local culture and the preservation of local traditions and the social environment in which they flourish.
Another focus is the protection of the physical environment, both at land and at sea. Misuse can occur from private as well as from public side.
To support the protection of man made and physical environment, it is necessary to know and to use the means at disposal in society.
Information has always been a key element for a healthy and constructive life in society. Information means coming together, not being isolated, and this is the basic aim of the Cultural Association of Skopelos: to bring people together who have similar wishes, ideas and visions and propose an “umbrella” structure for their common activities. The means are many, ranging from articles in a newspaper to gatherings around urgent themes like fire fighting and protection, cleaning up initiatives of the environment, and work in groups to investigate and promote aspects of artistic creativity like music, painting, dance, theatre etc. The Constitution of the Association mentions a range of possibilities for active involvement and collaboration.
The Association is a non-profit organization with legal status. As you will see in the constitution and in the practical work of the Cultural Association of Skopelos, its deeper focus is to promote and support a culture of social solidarity and voluntary action for the common good at all levels of society on the island of Skopelos.
This implies the strengthening of links between people of different nationalities living on Skopelos in order to achieve a harmonious co-existence with respect for individual differences.
Voluntary action that does not have remuneration as a priority, to help one’s neighbor and the community as a whole, is among the most noble aspects of human activity. This is based on an ethical behavior, which is much needed in today’s materialistic oriented society.
